BOLTON'S NATURALS FAQ

About Our Topical Magnesium

What is topical magnesium?

Topical magnesium is magnesium chloride applied directly to the skin in the form of a spray, gel, lotion, balm, or oil. It absorbs through the skin rather than the digestive tract, which is why many people prefer it alongside or instead of oral supplements.

What is magnesium chloride?

Magnesium chloride is a naturally occurring mineral compound found in seawater and ancient salt deposits. It is one of the most common forms of magnesium used in topical products because of its solubility and skin-compatible texture.

How pure is your magnesium chloride?

Every batch is independently laboratory tested for heavy metals, petrochemicals, agricultural runoff, and pathogens. We publish our commitment to clean sourcing because you deserve to know exactly what you are putting on your skin.

Why is magnesium chloride sometimes called "magnesium oil"?

Magnesium chloride has a silky, oil-like texture when dissolved in water, which is how the name came about. It is not an oil and contains no oil. It is water-based and non-staining. Our lotions and balms do contain plant-based oils, but those are added as moisturizing ingredients, separate from the magnesium itself.

Product Differences

What is the difference between your magnesium sprays, gels, lotions, and balms?

All of our topical magnesium products use the same quality magnesium chloride. The format is the difference.

Spray: Pre-diluted and ready to apply. Convenient for daily use on the go or at your desk.
Gel: A thicker, fast-absorbing formula. Apply and rinse after 20 minutes or leave on.
Lotion: A lighter daily moisturizer with magnesium. Good for full-body use.
Balm: A richer, more concentrated moisturizer. Best for targeted areas or dry skin.
Magnesium Chloride Oil: Our full-strength concentrate. Add a small amount to a bath or dilute in water to make your own spray at home.

Choose the format that fits your routine.

What is the difference between your Restore, Relax, and Recover lines?

The three lines share the same magnesium chloride base but are formulated for different moments in your day.
Restore (navy and teal): Unscented. Designed for everyday use, morning or evening.
Relax (purple and lilac): Lavender-scented. Formulated for wind-down routines and evening use.
Recover (orange and yellow): Contains arnica flower extract. Designed for use after physical activity and exercise.

How to Use

How much topical magnesium should I use?

Start with a thin layer applied to the area where you want to feel it most. Your skin absorbs what it needs. There is no strict dose for topical application. For the magnesium chloride liquid concentrate, start with one teaspoon added to a full bath.

When should I use topical magnesium?

Any time works. Many people use it in the morning as part of their skincare routine, after exercise, or in the evening before bed. The Relax line is specifically formulated for evening use. You can use topical magnesium more than once a day.

Do I need to rinse topical magnesium off?

For sprays, gels, and the liquid concentrate, allow 20 minutes for absorption. You can rinse or leave it on -- either works. Lotions and balms are designed to be left on like a regular moisturizer. Most people rinse off the gel after absorption.

Can I apply other skincare products after using topical magnesium?

Yes. Wait about 20 minutes after applying a spray, gel, or liquid before layering other products. Lotions and balms can be used the same way you would use any moisturizer.

Can I add the magnesium liquid to a bath?

Yes. Start with one teaspoon of the concentrate in a full bath. The liquid is highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Soak for 20 minutes.

Safety

Is topical magnesium safe?

Bolton's Naturals topical magnesium is lab tested for purity and is safe for external use by healthy adults. Avoid applying directly to broken, irritated, or inflamed skin, as you may feel a stinging sensation.

Can children use topical magnesium?

Consult your healthcare provider before using any topical supplement on children. If you do use it for children, our lotion or balm formats are the gentler choice for sensitive skin.

Can the magnesium chloride liquid be taken orally?

No. Bolton's Naturals magnesium chloride is licensed for external use only. It is not intended for oral consumption.

What if I feel a tingling or stinging sensation?

A mild tingling is common, especially on dry or sensitive skin, and typically fades as your skin adjusts. If irritation persists, discontinue use. Switching to a lotion or balm format usually reduces this sensation, as the added emollients buffer the magnesium chloride.

Will topical magnesium cause a laxative effect?

No. Transdermal magnesium bypasses the digestive system entirely, so the laxative effect associated with high-dose oral magnesium supplements does not apply.

Topical vs. Oral Magnesium

Does topical magnesium replace an oral magnesium supplement?

Some people use topical magnesium on its own. Others use it alongside an oral supplement. The right approach depends on your routine and your individual needs. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. If you are looking for an oral magnesium supplement, we recommend Natural Calm magnesium citrate, made by our sister brand at naturalcalm.ca.

Why do some people choose topical magnesium over an oral supplement?

Oral magnesium at higher doses can cause digestive discomfort in some people. Topical magnesium absorbs through the skin and does not affect the digestive tract, which is why it suits people who want to avoid that.

Heavenly Sleep Liquid Melatonin

What is Heavenly Sleep Liquid Melatonin?

Heavenly Sleep is Bolton's Naturals liquid melatonin supplement. It is available in a dropper bottle and a convenient spray bottle. The formulas are identical. The spray is designed for easy bedside use.

Why do you use synthetic melatonin?

Natural melatonin is derived from animal pineal glands, which we do not support on ethical grounds and which carries safety concerns related to biological materials. The synthetic melatonin in Heavenly Sleep is structurally identical to the melatonin your body produces. It is vegan and free from animal products.

Does your melatonin contain sugar or allergens?

No. Heavenly Sleep contains no sugar, no artificial sweeteners, and is free from wheat, soy, and nuts. The orange flavor is a light natural flavoring.

How much liquid melatonin should I take?

One dropper delivers 3 mg of melatonin. Follow the dosage directions on the product label. If you are unsure about the right dose for your situation, consult your healthcare provider.

When should I take liquid melatonin?

Take Heavenly Sleep approximately 30 minutes before you want to fall asleep. Liquid melatonin absorbs faster than tablets, so effects may onset sooner.

Can I take melatonin every night?

Many people use melatonin occasionally rather than nightly. If you are using it regularly and still experiencing sleep difficulties, speak with your healthcare provider to rule out underlying causes.

Is liquid melatonin safe?

Heavenly Sleep is safe for healthy adults when used as directed. Do not drive or operate machinery for 4 to 5 hours after taking melatonin. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking prescription medications, or managing a health condition, consult your healthcare provider before use.

Can children take liquid melatonin?

Consult your healthcare provider before giving melatonin to children.

What are the possible side effects of melatonin?

Some people experience vivid dreams, headaches, nausea, daytime drowsiness, or grogginess. If you experience side effects, reduce your dose or discontinue use and speak with your healthcare provider.
